What to expect when you use Visible and other 3rd party providers with the Insty Connect Print

Please watch this video if you are using Visible or other 3rd party provider.  If you are having issues with speeds or latency, the answers are in this video:

What to expect with Visible and other 3rd party providers.

Visible and other 3rd party providers (like Mint) are able to provide plans at cheaper prices because they are using 'left over' bandwidth from the tier one providers like Verizon and T-Mobile.

Here's what you might experience when using a third party provider with the Insty connect:

  • Higher latency (ping times)
  • Lower upload and download speeds
  • Intermittent disconnects (especially when using the lower frequency bands 12,13, etc)

Any of these issues are not an indication of an issue with the Insty Connect, they are common when using a 3rd party provider.

Per the terms of Visible, hotspot data is capped at 5mb up/down.  We have had reports of the cap being lifted to 10mb up/down, but it seems only in certain areas at this time.

Some users are changing TTL settings to try to improve internet speeds, but typically these changes are not supported by your provider.  Adjusting any TTL settings may cause unintended results including loss of connectivity or intermittent disconnects.  We cannot assist with any custom TTL modifications.   For more information about TTL settings, please see this KB article: Setting a custom TTL value on the Insty Connect.

If you are seeing download speeds that are slower than upload speeds, that usually means the tower is congested and you are being de-prioritized under heavy Verizon use.

Additional notes and tips for Visible:

Try to avoid band 13 if possible.  This band is where normal heavy Verizon usage happens, and slow visible speeds will be common.  If you can, band lock to 66, 4 or 5 as there is usually more bandwidth available on those bands.

Band locking to band 13 may get a registration denied, where the tower will essentially kick you off.  The only time band 13 will work well is in rural areas where band 13 is the only band available.

As noted, installing your wings outdoors will be the best option for getting decent speeds with 3rd party providers like Visible, because it will allow you to connect to the higher frequency bands like 4,5, and 66, where there is more bandwidth available.
